A spun filter, also known as a PP (polypropylene) spun or sediment filter, is typically the first stage of filtration in a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, designed to remove physical impurities from the water. This critical pre-filtration step protects the more sensitive and expensive downstream components, like the RO membrane, from clogging and damage.
Function and Mechanism
The primary purpose of the spun filter is mechanical filtration of visible particles in the water.
Contaminant Removal: It effectively captures suspended solids such as dirt, sand, silt, rust, and scale particles.
Depth Filtration: The filter is made of fine melted and thermally bonded polypropylene microfibers that are spun into a cylinder with a gradient density. The outer layers are more porous to trap larger particles, while the inner layers are denser to capture finer impurities, ensuring efficient filtration throughout the cartridge's depth.
Pre-filtration: Positioned as the first line of defense, it reduces the load on subsequent filters (like carbon filters) and the main RO membrane, which extends their operational life and maintains the overall system's efficiency.
Key Features
Material: Spun filters are made from 100% food-grade polypropylene fibers, which are non-toxic and resistant to a broad range of chemicals, acids, and bases.
Micron Rating: They are available in various micron ratings (e.g., 1, 5, 10 microns), with a 5-micron rating being common for domestic RO pre-filters. This rating indicates the minimum size of particles the filter is designed to capture.
Compatibility: Most spun filters are designed to be universally compatible and fit into standard 10-inch filter housings found in residential and commercial RO systems.
Maintenance: They are typically easy to install and replace without specialized tools. Regular replacement (every 3 to 6 months, depending on water quality and usage) is recommended to prevent clogging and save on more expensive repairs
